Another name of Panjim is Panaji. There are many theories to support the origin of the name. One theory suggests that Panjim is derived from Portuguese word Pangim. Another theory suggests that Sanskrit words Panjani and khali which mean boat and small creek respectively together are responsible for the name Panaji. Whereas some other historians suggest that the place was named after a Shia Muslim mosque ‘Panja’ which is located on a hilltop. Whatever it is, to a common man the Goan capital is known as Panjim.
